Lesson 6 min· foundational
Your first 60 minutes on the floor
What to do, what to skip, who to find.
Section 1
Land calmly
Walk in slowly. Find the charge nurse, introduce yourself by first name and role. Ask which workflow is the most stressful right now.
Section 2
Watch before you touch
Stand to the side of a workstation. Observe two full workflows before offering input. Most issues are muscle-memory drift, not system failure.
Section 3
Set the first signal
Tell the unit how to reach you: a single short sentence. 'I'll be at this nurses' station for the next hour — wave me over.'
Takeaways
- Posture beats expertise in the first hour.
- Find the charge nurse first.
- Watch twice before you speak.
